A COUGAR IS COMING TO AUSTRALIA.
The Vancouver Cougars are proud to wish Scott Fleming and his family all the very best for their AustralianAdventure that kicks off in February. Scott has been an integral part of the growth of the VAFC and developed through the ranks after starting his footy career with the Delta Juniors AFL.
Scott and his family embark on a trip to Australia where Scott will be playing footy with the Broadbeach team –
Broadbeach Australian Football Club, also known as the Broadbeach Cats, is a Gold Coast based club competing in the AFL Queensland Australian rules football competition.
Despite having been in existence since the early 1960s, the Broadbeach Football Club has only competed at state league level for a handful of seasons. Nevertheless, it has shown steady improvement throughout its brief involvement, and in 2004, under the coaching of Craig O'Brien, it won 14 of its 18 home and away matches and went on to reach the preliminary final before losing to Morningside.
In 2005, the Cats were one of eight inaugural members of Queensland football's new 1st Division set-up, and they once again reached the finals.
Broadbeach has an infamous rivaly with fellow AFL Queensland Division 1 team, Southport Sharks. These games often have higher than usual attendance of supporters due to the high tension of the games.
Scott's career with the Cougars has been very impressive as indicated by an article written in the World Footy News which pronounced "Fleming is coming through the junior program set up by Mike McFarlane, who is now President of AFL Canada. The teenager is playing both in the North Delta Junior AFL and in the metro league based around Vancouver and Burnaby. The latter is giving him invaluable experience against adults, and in the first match the gun youngster booted 9 goals.".
Cougars Senior Coach Scott Sheen commented that "Scott was a very impressive talent who improved immensely each and every game. His long kicking and accuracy for goal and marking skills are a prominant aspect of his game. I know he will be greatly missed in Vancouver but the experience in Australia will be invaluable".
Scott Sheen and Stuart Grills attended a farewell function for Scott Fleming on January 27th in Delta and presented him with the Vancouver Cougars T-Shirts to remind him of his roots and his mates back in Canada while overseas!
Fleming departs YVR Tuesday, February 5th and will be heading into hot Queensland temperatures! As part of Scott's Australian tour he will be attending the 2008 International Tournament in Melbourne playing with Canada's Northwind squad.
Scott's tour will be reported on www.bcfooty. com throughout the year!
