AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE - TOP MOMENTS
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the Australian national competition in professional Australian Rules Football. It began life in 1897 with the breakaway of eight sides from the Victoria Football Association to form the Victoria Football League, expanding to 12 teams by 1925. This situation remained until 1982, when the transformation of the league to a national competition began with the relocation of South Melbourne to Sydney. Subsequently, 2 clubs apiece from South and West Australia have joined along with one from Queensland, the league being renamed the Australian Football League in 1990. The AFL currently comprises 16 teams, playing 22 home and away rounds between March and August. This is followed by a four-week finals series which culminates in two teams playing off in the Grand Final, for the Premiership title. The AFL is the most popular Australian sports competition in terms of TV ratings.

TOP PLAYERS
Chris Judd, of Carlton Football Club, has built a reputation as one of the game`s most explosive, damaging midfielders. Judd, the 6ft 3in Carlton captain, is an AFL Premiership captain, Brownlow Medalist, Leigh Matthews Trophy winner, and Norm Smith Medalist. He has also been awarded three All-Australian jumpers (including one as captain in 2008), three Club Champion Awards and three Ross Glendinning Medals.

Gary Ablett, Jr. is the eldest son of AFL Hall of Fame member Gary Ablett, Snr. The 6ft midfielder was drafted by Geelong as the 40th draft pick of 2001. As a forward, he enjoyed an early success with the club`s Premiership win of 2002. With improved fitness, Ablett has subsequently excelled as a midfielder, earning many individual accolades and forming part of Geelong`s 2007 Premiership-winning team.

TOP MATCHES
The 1989 Grand Final, between Hawthorn and Geelong is widely considered one of the great games of the modern era. It was a very physical game from the outset, with Mark Yeates flattening Hawthorn`s Dermott Brereton at the opening bounce, bruising his kidney, cracking ribs and causing internal bleeding. Despite being severely winded and concussed, Brereton refused to leave the field and kicked an inspirational goal just minutes later. Despite a Grand Final record nine goals from Geelong`s Gary Ablett, Hawthorn still went on to win by six points.

FUTURE OF THE AFL
The future of the AFL seems secure, with up to 3 new teams expected to enter the league over the next few years. A provisional licence has been granted to the Gold Coast Club, while bids from West Sydney and Tasmania are also under consideration. Following a lengthy period of consultation with the football industry, the AFL Commission introduced the "Next Generation" strategy in 2007. This is a 5-year plan, involving the distribution of some $1.4 million with the game. AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou stated that the Next Generation strategy represented a balance of investment in AFL clubs, the competition, game development and facilities, underpinning the future of Australian Football.
The AFL is the subject of various tipping and betting competitions. In recent years, national, website-based tipping competitions, available with all wireless broadband plans, have become popular, along with "fantasy" football competitions based on real player statistics.
