DON’T GO NUTS TRYING TO GET TO SLEEP BEFORE A BIG MATCH
One of the most important things you can do to prepare yourself for a successful game is to get a good night’s sleep.

Even though most players have no problem staying asleep once they nod off, a large percentage of players have trouble getting to sleep in the first place.
Often there a million things running through your mind when you first crawl in bed, especially before an important game, your first game, coming back from injury or even when facing a tough opponent the next day.

One way to help shut down mentally is a method suggested by scientists at the University of Texas .

Their suggestion? Munch on a few walnuts before hitting the sack!

Research performed by the scientists say that walnuts can help you fall asleep easier by supplying your body with melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone produced by the brain in response to darkness and helps regulate your circadian rhythm, or internal body clock. And it is your internal body clock that tells you when you are sleepy. A rich source of antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, Walnuts are also part of a healthy diet.

But don’t have too many before bed because you will be too busy digesting them to get a good night’s sleep. Just a small handful should be enough to help you get to shut down mentally and get to sleep a lot easier.

And it is probably a good idea to take them out of the shells first, as well!

However, if that doesn’t work, maybe watch a couple of re-runs of some old ‘Big Brother’ episodes!

But as always, remember to check with your club dietician first.
