SAINTS CRUSH EAGLES |
Northern Territory powerhouse, St.Marys, have won back-to-back premierships, ruining Shannon Motlop’s dream of leading the Wanderers to the 2008/09 NTFL Premiership at TIO Stadium.

Motlop, who played in North Melbourne’s 1999 premiership and replaced Melbourne’s Troy Broadbridge (who died in the Boxing Day tsunami), had earlier stated that being the captain of a Wanderers premiership would have been the crowning moment of his football career. Motlop began his career in the Northern Territory when he was 6 years old and had been quoted as saying that “As good as winning an AFL premiership was, this is where I started. It would mean a bit more to me to play for Wanderers in a premiership”. Motlop was drafted from Wanderers by North Melbourne as the 85th pick in the 1998 National Draft. He has also played for Port Power, Sandringham & North Adelaide. The Eagles lost the night Grand Final by 64 points, giving former Essendon & Sydney Swans player, Merv Neagle, a premiership in his first year coaching the Saints. Neagle, who knew nothing about the club when he arrived, was a member of Essendon's 1984 premiership side. He finished second in the 1980 Brownlow Medal and equal fifth the following season. He is the father of Essendon player Jay Neagle. He replaced NTFL premiership-winning coach Brett Hand who was appointed full time boss of NT Institute of Sport football department. Final scores were St.Marys (22.13-145) to Wanderers (11.15-81).
