A Grand Day For an Old Assumption Boy
Assumption College Kilmore and the Hawthorn football club share a unique bond. Most Hawthorn players that attended the college have now played in a premiership.
The first one is Brandon Edwards, who played in the centre in Hawthorns first grand final in 1961. Edwards 41 possesions in that game have never been betered, and his efforts helped get the hawks back when they where down at half time. Next is champion rover Peter Crimmins. Whom the scoreboard at Assumption is named after, Crimmins played over 100 games for Hawthorn, and was a member of the 1971 premiership teams win over St. Kilda. He was unfortunatlly not picked in 1976 by coach John Kennedy, who urged his players to win for 'the little fella' Hawthorn won that game, and a famous picture is published of Crimmins holding the premiership cup at his house with his teammates. He died only 3 days later, the best and fairest at Hawthorn is named in his honour. And finally Shane Crawford, the 1999 Brownlow Medalist finally got his wish. He came to Hawthorn at the end of their dominance, and is the longest waiting player to have won the premiership, and his famous line 'thats what I'm talking about' is sure to live on in Grand Final history. It is said that his brother Robert was just as good. But while its joy for some, its heartbreaking for others, Tom Lonergan, the story of the year also attended Assumption College, and kicked the first goal of the match, and Billy Brownless who boarded at the school and played in 4 losing Grand Finals with the cats.
