Assumptions 36th AGSV Title.
A thrilling game at Trinity saw Assumptions First XVIII triumph agaisnt PEGS by 2 points in the AGSV Grand Final.
In a low scoring affair, Assumption lead from the front and looked a lot more determine and willing all day. But PEGS were never in doubt. They were competitive all day, and were lucky not to get over the line. A calm Assumption team entered the arena with a very experienced team including Vic Country players Jamie Sheahan, Michael Talia and star Full Forward Luke Gestier. While PEGS were without Captain Jackson Trengrove and Melbourne player Addam Maric. It took a while for the game to get going as nerves were clear from all players, and there were only 2 goals kicked for the whole 1st Quarter. And at Quarter time PEGS had their noses in front by 2 points(2.0, 1.4) Assumption had the wind in the 2nd Quarter and they made the most of it. Kicking 5 goals to PEGS 2. The defensive work of backman Seth Hill and Sam Vale was superb. Full Forward Luke Gestier was having trouble as he had 4 men on him. (as the last time PEGS and ACK met Gestier kicked 7) but had good support from Tallan Wright and Shannon Day. The run from on ballers Jackson Garvey-Hawke and Will Holman was excellent and at Half Time Assumption had found their way in front by 14 points. Still calm, but all nerves gone the Third quarter was a beauty, PEGS had the wind and kicked 3 while Assumption kicked its chances away to only manage 1 for the term. Poor kicking and half asked efforts from players saw them in trouble at three quarter time and just in front by 1 point. Assumption where in this position agaisnt De La Salle in the semi-final, but there was no prize for second place today and Assumption would have to play their hearts out this final quarter. A cracking last quarter with the lead changing several times and 5 minutes into the quarter the scores were locked on 60 points each. The scores stayed that way for about 9 minutes, and nerves where certainly getting to players and spectators now. Assumption needed a goal and they where 5 points down. And then the ball fell into the arms of Luke Gestier. The most trusted goal kicker in the team had the ball, 35 meters out, directly in front, the game in the balance. Time running out, he would have to slot this. He looked completly calm, any other day he would have kicked it, he started his run and kicked truly of the left foot. Players and spectators cheered enthusiastically and that goal gave Assumption breathing space. As the ball was brought back to centre, PEGS players frantically hurried the ball forward and nearly conceded a behind but the ball carried to the forward pocket and went out of bounds. The ball was 7 meters out from PEGS goal and only seconds remaining, the sireon sounded and Assumption had won by 2 points. Enthusiastic players and spectators rushed onto the ground and gathered triumphantly around the players. Heartbrocken PEGS players lay on the ground exhausted, not believing their hat-trick had been stolen. Ken Fletcher was gallent in defeat, but at the end of the day there can only be one winner, and there was no prize for second place. For PEGS it was the end of a 2 year domination. And for Assumption their first premiership win since their 5-in-a-row from 2001-05 . And perhaps the start of 5 more?
FINAL SCOREBOARD
